Young people as Teachers
In the fall of 2014 The Visual Media Workshop @ KPU and the Anchorage School District partnered to create an open-learning resource about media and social justice created by young people for young people.
Breaking the mold that says: in school students learn and teachers teach, this partnership made students the teachers, and it made their lessons free online resources for anyone.
The Process: After much discussion and planning, Katie Warfield began the semester working with her first year communication studies students to produce a series of 5-minute lessons on key terms related to media and social justice. The best of the best lessons are listed here. The videos were then shared with the students of Mary Richard's grade 12 English class. Equipped with some key terms, the students in Mary's class then applied these ideas to a series of novels they have been reading and films they'd watched this year. Mary worked with her students to produce written, video and audio responses to these videos. The best of the best of these projects are also featured here.
The overall goal of the partnership is what you see here: a series of free online resources to teach young people about media and social justice which, themselves, were created by young people. We hope you enjoy the results.
